Forging the State: European State Formation and the Anglo-Scottish Union of 1707
A Mackillop & M O'siochru
Published: Dec 09
Publisher: Dundee University Press
ISBN: 9781845860486
£50.00 Pbk
This book highlights the continental background to the formation of the United Kingdom. The 1707 Union was only one example of a more generalised process of European state formation and national realignment during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

The book provides a number of case studies of other contemporaneous attempts at union, ranging from Poland-Lithuania, Aragon and Castile, Ireland and Austria-Hungary. When negotiating its amalgamation with England, Scotland could draw upon a wide variety of constitutional, political and economic variants of union. While Scots received much of their legal, intellectual and political traditions from northern Protestant Europe, this book argues that southern, central and Catholic Europe also provided influential examples of state formation and union.

The final two chapters highlight the medieval origins of the debate on Scottish union with England, as well as the profound impact of the 1707 treaty at the local level.

International Succession
L Garb & J Wood
Publisher: Oxford University Press
Published: Jan 10
ISBN: 9780199550272
£145.00 Hbk
Increasing numbers of people have connections with one country, but live and work in another, frequently owning property or investments in several countries. As such, international aspects arise in an increasing number of estates. Different countries may have separate arrangements for ownership, taxation, and succession. International Succession equips practitioners with the information necessary to navigate problems involving these different systems.

Although lawyers would often advise only on the law of the jurisdictions in which they are based, seeking advice from lawyers in other countries, this book will save the practitioner the time - and expense - of ascertaining the basics concerning the inheritance systems in different countries, offering clear and easy to use information on the laws of inheritance and succession.

Each country's report is based on responses to a comprehensive questionnaire that considers the practical issues arising from the jurisdiction's individual laws, making it easy for users to make specific comparisons between the laws of one country and another. The book covers fifty countries with entries written by experts from each country, making it an invaluable resource for the busy practitioner.

This title is an improved and expanded version of International Succession, edited by Louis Garb and published by Kluwer Law International, 2004. This edition, published in hardback form, will also be supplemented annually in between editions to update the individual country entries.

International Commercial Litigation
R Fentiman
Publisher: Oxford University Press
Expected Publication Date: 28/02/10
ISBN: 9780199265435
£175.00 Hbk
The legal framework of cross-border commercial disputes is important and complex in practice, but it is increasingly difficult to discern the subject's structure and assumptions. This book is a definitive account of the law and practice of international commercial disputes in the English courts, which summarises the present state of the law, and articulates its underlying principles. It is intended to be accessible to non-specialist practitioners.

The book offers an account of the subject which is comprehensive, yet also concise and highly focused, designed to reflect the perceptions and concerns of practitioners. A feature of the book is its emphasis on evolving areas of practice, and issues of difficulty. Such topics as the developing law of cross-border injunctions, and the relationship between national and community law are extensively explored. Where the law is uncertain or controversial, the rival arguments are examined and assessed. The emphasis is on the solution of current (or future) problems, in addition to explaining contested issues. It is as much concerned with the impact of litigation on cross-border transactions - including prospective planning and risk-avoidance - as it is with dispute resolution. It examines the scope of party choice, and the legal risks associated with cross-border business. Consideration is given as to how these risks might be avoided or reduced by planning or agreement, by adopting particular business structures, or by opting for alternative forms of dispute resolution.

The Commentary provides an article-by-article analysis of the Statute. Each of the 128 articles is presented accompanied by a bibliography of academic literature relevant to that provision, an overview of the drafting history of the provision and an analysis of the text. The analytical portion of each chapter draws upon relevant case law from the Court itself, as well as from other international and national criminal tribunals, academic commentary, and the related instruments such as the Elements of Crimes, the Rules of Procedure and Evidence and the Relationship Agreement with the United Nations. £35.00 Hbk
First edition, untrimmed pages, in very good condition. Written by Mark Napier, Advocate this work is a detailed examination of the complicated genealogical, historical, and legal problems involved with settling the rightful ownership of the Earldom of Lennox, a region also known as the Sheriffdom of Dunbarton.
The Earldom of Lennox's very date of creation is in dispute, but it is thought to be in the 12th or 13th century. It descended in a direct line until the 14th century, when it was inherited by one or another of three daughters, two of whom were married to Stewarts and the third into the Menteith family. The resolution of the dispute over the Earldom and the honors which it carried with it continued into the early 19th century and involved claims by the families of Haldane, Napier, Hamilton, Menteith, and others as to its rightful possessor.

Trial of the Queen of England 1820: Volume 1 (The Case for the Prosecution)
Publisher: T Kelly, London
Published: 1821
Stock code: 12453000156A
£40.00 Hbk
In good condition, although the boards have been taped to the book block.

This is the first volume only of a two-volume set. It contains the evidence in support of the charges of adulterous intercourse laid against Queen Caroline, by her husband George IV, in 1820. The trial was held in the House of Lords and the charges were later dropped thanks to a spirited defence and the overwhelming support of the public.

The volume not only gives details of the evidence but also describes the Queen's arrival each day for the trial and her demeanour during it. It is one of many such volumes printed to take advantage of the great interest the trial aroused in the British public.
